Setting a Beautiful Springtime Table
Don't feel like you have to go out and spend a lot of money. These ideas are simple to execute and affordable for any budget!
First, think about your background. Got a gorgeous table? Maybe leave it uncovered for some natural beauty this spring. Want to add a pop of color? Go bold with a brightly colored tablecloth. I like royal blue because it looks great against the colors of the season.
Then, add texture. Think table runners, placemats and chargers. These can help you add visual interest and create a more interesting look and feel.
Consider the dishes you want to use. I tend to stick with all white since they can be mixed and matched with anything....but if you love color, go all out! And don't feel like you have to be all matchy matchy. Combine patterns and colors to create a more exciting tablescape.
Accessories are when the real fun begins...I have some adorable little bird nests that I like to use. These were thrifted a few years ago and cost just a couple of bucks. I also like to incorporate elements like bunnies, ceramic flowers and small containers.
Don't forget to add natural elements! Pebbles, rocks, twigs or things you've collected can be really cute. And don't hesitate to snip a few branches from blooming shrubs or plants in your yard.
All of this can be combined in a lovely, affordable and simple-to-create spring tablescape!

Spring Cleaning: Non-Toxic DIY Products to Make at Home
There's no better time than now to begin your spring cleaning. I definitely need to do mine! Don't you just feel more at peace when your home is tidy and clean? Clutter and grime breeds chaos and stifles creativity for sure.
I'm trying to be healthier and I know that goes beyond just what I eat. So many of the products we buy have harsh chemicals that aren't good for our skin and lungs. I've been guilty of mixing the wrong things while cleaning the bathroom and my home smelled like a swimming pool.
This spring, I'm trying my hand at making some all natural cleansers to use on my home. And I thought I'd share them on the blog too.
DIY Cleaners for the Bathroom
The bathroom is one of those areas in my home that I want to be clean, clean, clean. So I've been hesitant to use all natural cleaners because I was afraid they might not do the trick.
After reading about tea tree oil and its disinfecting properties, I'm going to give it a try.
To create a toilet scrub that freshens odors while cleaning, mix a half of a cup of baking soda with approximately 15 drops of tea tree oil. Pour that into the toilet bowl. Then, add 1/4 a cup of white vinegar and get to scrubbing. The vinegar and baking soda creates a fizz and the tea tree disinfects.
You can also mix some vinegar and tea tree oil in a spray bottle to use for routine cleaning of the seat and tank of your toilet.
The spray bottle of vinegar also works for your shower and sink. I keep a little jar of baking soda near my bathroom sink that I use to exfoliate my skin after washing my face but I learned that if a little bit fell into the sink, I could rub it around to clean that as well.
Cute salt & pepper shakers from the Dollar General Store make a great container/dispenser for this!
Got a cast iron bathtub with rust and stains? Did you know you can use half a grapefruit and some salt to clean it? Sprinkle the salt liberally and use the grapefruit half as sort of a scrubber. Get lots of juice in there and add more salt if needed.
DIY Cleaners for the Kitchen
Clean kitchen countertops with your spray bottle of vinegar and a little water. If you have granite, stone, or marble counters, substitute the vinegar with rubbing alcohol. You can also use vodka and I prefer the vanilla flavored version because of the great scent.
Cutting boards can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Use half a lemon to clean both plastic and wooden varieties. If it has stubborn stains, put some iodized salt on first and scrub that with the lemon to really get it good and clean.
If you need to clean cast iron, use olive oil and salt to make a paste. Then scrub well either with your fingers or a stiff bristled brush. You can rinse with warm water before re-seasoning your pans in a warm oven. NEVER use soap on your cast iron as it removes all the good baked in seasoning. Cast iron cookware can get to 400 degrees after just 4 minutes in a medium oven and it's sterile at 212 degrees.
Got an older fridge that needs some TLC? Use about a half a cup of baking soda mixed with warm water to clean it. The warm water will soften dried on food and stains while the baking soda is a mild abrasive to rub them away.
These are just a few of the simple recipes for cleaning products you can create for your home this spring. When you get ready to work around your home, consider your health and wellness. Choose products that contribute to your family's health and safety...not harsh chemicals that could do harm! Think outside the box next time and make your home really shine!

Creative Ways to Set a Spring Table
When I was a kid, I used to love setting the table before dinner. Instead of eating in our home's formal dining room, we normally ate around a plain wooden table in the middle of our kitchen. It wasn't fancy china or exquisite linens that I used to adorn our eating surface, but instead my mom's old woven placemats and pottery dishes, beige rimmed in baby blue.
Our meals weren't gourmet, but the act of gathering together was meaningful anyway. Memorable.
“If the home is a body, the table is the heart, the beating center, the sustainer of life and health.”― Shauna Niequist, Bread and Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes
I hardly ever get to set the table anymore. My husband and I sometimes eat in the den, on trays in our laps. When we do use our dining table, it's still just the two of us and we rarely put down placemats or light candles. But that's okay with me. Meals don't have to be fancy to matter. When you are gathered with those you love, this is what matters most.
Although, sometimes it's still fun to set a lovely table and spring is a great time for this. Whether you are hosting a large gathering of dear friends or just dining with one or two special someones, there's no reason you can't get creative and set a lovely spring table.
Here are some of my best tips for setting a spring table. I hope it inspires you to get creative and think outside the box at the next meal you host for friends and loved ones.
Creative ideas for setting a pretty spring table
1) Choose a color scheme and stick with it -
2) Shop your home before hitting the home decor store -
3) Mix and match -
4) Incorporate natural elements -
5) Leave room for the food -

Fun with Coffee - Hosting a DIY Coffee Party plus a Simple Coffee Scrub
When I was growing up, my parents didn't let me drink coffee. My grandparents would allow me to have a cup when I visited their house, although it was probably mostly cream. I remember feeling so grown up while sipping from my piping hot mug.
As a teenager growing up in my small southern hometown, going to the coffee shop was a huge rite of passage. We had one coffee shop called the Magic Bean that was frequented by older teens and college kids. Of course, my parents forbid me to go there. So it wasn't until a more family-friendly coffee shop called Poet's opened up that I was able to experience the magic of coffee house coffee.
It wasn't until after I married my husband that I started drinking coffee every day. I always enjoyed the taste of it, but never got the process of brewing it quite down pat. Since I now have someone who makes it very well, I drink at least a cup or two each morning.
I love to entertain, but am always looking for unique ways to do it. And this is what got me thinking about how fun it would be to throw a DIY coffee party. It could be in conjunction with a book club meeting or other gathering, or you could just do a coffee party for coffee's sake. Either way, it's a simple and fun way to get together with friends and enjoy something we all love.
How to Host a DIY Coffee Party
To throw your own coffee shop party at home, you'll need coffee and coffee accouterments.
- Assorted flavored syrups (store-bought or make your own)
- Sweeteners (various types of sugar, honey, agave, etc)
- Different creamers (half & half, almond milk, whipping cream, and my personal favorite - sweetened condensed milk)
- Cinnamon (or cinnamon sticks), Nutmeg or Pumpkin Pie Spice
To make a Shakerato, all you need is:
- Brewed espresso
- Sugar
- Ice
Simple 4-Ingredient Coffee Scrub
I've tried making a coffee scrub before, but this one is even easier than the recipe I used previously.
It only requires 4 simple, natural ingredients. I love it when I can make something that doesn't contain a bunch of stuff I can't pronounce.
To make this simple coffee scrub, you'll need:
- Coffee (finely ground)
- Coconut oil
- Coconut sugar (or another coarse sugar)
- Cinnamon

How to Decorate Your Hat for the Kentucky Derby
This morning, I joined my friends at Knoxville's Fox43 to share some ideas about how to decorate your hat for a Kentucky Derby party or other event. The most important thing to remember is you don't have to spend a lot of money to feel fantastic, just get creative and use what you have!
Check out my segment below or if you are receiving this post via email, you can click here to view it.
How to Decorate Your Hat for the Kentucky Derby
Some items to consider using for Derby Hat decorations:
- Rhinestone brooches or pins
- Colorful silk scarves
- Silk flowers or greenery
- Real flowers or cut greenery
- Feathers
- Mesh ribbon (such as the kind used on wreaths)
- Grosgrain ribbon
- Silk ribbon
- Tulle or netting
- Lace
- Scrap-booking trinkets or accouterments
I used bobby pins to fasten the different decorative items to the hats for a less permanent solution. You could also use a hot glue gun or floral wire.
Just remember that if you are going to wear the hat for an extended period of time, weight and balance could become an issue if you use heavy things.
But it's a fun project and a fun time to get dressed up and celebrate springtime in the south! I hope you were inspired to decorate your own Kentucky Derby hat this year! There's really no limit except your creativity!

Southern Celebrations: How to Host a Mardi Gras Party
I shared some tips for a DIY Mardi Gras party on Knoxville's WTNZ Fox43 and I wanted to share them with you as well!
The central focus of any good party is always the food, right? My idea for a DIY Mardi Gras celebration is to set up a make-your-own grits bar. It's sort of like a hot fudge sundae bar, except with grits. The best thing about grits (besides their being tasty) is they are affordable. You can make up a whole mess of grits without spending much money.
Then, gather a variety of different toppings and let your guests go to town!
Possible topping options for a Mardi Gras grits bar include:
- Shrimp
- corn
- feta cheese
- roasted red peppers
- sun-dried tomatoes
- sauteed spinach
- chives or chopped onions
- creme fraiche
- andouille sausauge
- jalapeno peppers
- chow chow, relish, etc.
Other food to serve for a Mardi Gras party might be anything and everything that is local to New Orleans or Louisiana. Zapp's chips, Abita beer (or root beer), Tobasco, pralines, etc. Whatever you can find and think your guests might enjoy! It's your party after all.

Easter Treats, a recipe roundup
One of my favorite recipes for a delicious Easter punch is my Baptist Champagne. We call it that because it's free of alcohol, thus safe for Baptist consumption (I was raised Baptist so I'm not poking fun, honest!). If you ever make it once, be prepared to give out the recipe because I always get requests for it. You'll want to keep the ingredients on hand to make it again and again!
Another tasty Easter dish is my recipe for "Not Your Granny's Green Bean Salad." This is so easy to create and makes a perfect complement to your main dish.
No southern Easter table is complete without a Jell-O salad! Here's a recipe for a good one if you'd like to make a last minute addition to your menu.
For a more casual Easter meal or perhaps as an appetizer, my Homemade Pimento Cheese is a blog favorite. This post was my most popular for many years, until the Ritz Cracker Candy post usurped its popularity! Both are delish and I swear by the recipes.

How to Set A Southern Table for Spring & Easter
Y'all know I don't like to spend a lot of money so most of my suggestions can be created on a small budget.
One way to dress up your Easter table is with the good china. My good china is thrifted, mind you, but whether you inherited Grandma's priceless heirloom set or got them as a wedding present, I'm a firm believer that if you have dishes you love you should use them! There's no reason to store or saves them for a special occasion...that special occasion is today. If you're like me and have odd pieces of thrift store china, use them too! Mix and match to create unique combinations. It doesn't have to be perfect...just play around until you find a look you like!
Another way you can add something special to your table is with cloth napkins. There are hundreds of intricate ways to fold and style napkins, but I am sharing a couple of my favorites. One, shown below from the adorable blog Sugar and Charm, is the bow tie fold. It's really easy to re-create and you only need a napkin and a scrap of ribbon to complete it.

Biscuits, Rolls and Chocolate Bacon
This weekend is the second ever International Biscuit Festival and I’m attending! Last year’s event had a few kinks. so hopefully the organizers have ironed things out and are prepared for the huge crowds that will attend. It’s sure to be a great time for everyone involved. Here’s my post on prepping for last year’s fest.
If you don’t feel like making biscuits, here’s a link to a post I did with a recipe for the Blue Willow Inn’s Buttery Biscuit Rolls. They are super easy and melt in your mouth!
If your mouth wasn’t watering enough, hop over to the blog for the fabulous artisan chocolate makers Olive & Sinclair. Located in Nashville, TN, this company has really been getting some great press, first from folks like Gwyneth Paltrow and now from national food events. They are even collaborating with Mr. Alan Benton on some special bacon flavored chocolate.
Hopefully Mr. Benton will be at Biscuit Fest and we can talk to him about it!

Gone with the Wind Social Media Extravaganza
little while back, I hinted at some upcoming Atlanta adventures I had planned and one of them took place over the weekend. It should be no secret here on SBS I have a deep love for all things Gone with the Wind. After connecting via blogland & twitter, my adorable friend Ms. Brandi Nell, Southern Belle extended an invitation my way. In addition to having a fantastic blog, Brandi is kind of a big deal at the Atlanta History Center, which operates the Margaret Mitchell House, where GWTW was written.
The event was a blogger/social media meet-up and VIP tour of the apartment where Ms. Mitchell wrote her beloved novel. We were treated to yummy food, courtesy of Whole Foods and viewed the trailer for a new Margaret Mitchell documentary, produced by Georgia Public Broadcasting. All of this hooplah is to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the publication of Gone with the Wind, with an event Saturday May 14th to kick off the festivities.
If you’ve never been to the Margaret Mitchell House, you should definitely put it on your to-do list. Even if you aren’t a huge GWTW fan, it offers such a neat slice of history. I’m planning to get back to Atlanta during the summer to experience more of the festivities, including seeing a manuscript with the “lost chapters” of the book. This post is full of links to help you find out more information about all the fun…also search for the hashtag #GWTW75 to join the conversation on Twitter!
{side note: I just loved meeting Brandi in person…she made the whole day so special. We are not only kindred spirits, but also sorority sisters who attended different schools. Her blog is lovely and so is she!}

Anti-Recipe: Strawberry Eatin’ Mess
The strawberry crops have been coming in and while I could eat them plain by the bowlfuls, I wanted to find another way to enjoy this lovely berry. I found an idea here and decided to try it. The actual name of this typically British dessert is Eaton Mess, as in Eaton College. Apparently it was served at the school’s annual picnic. Since I have always been prone to mishearing words and phrases (i.e. chester drawers), I decided to rename it with a southern twist. Hope you enjoy this easy treat! The final product isn’t all that pretty to look at, but it sure was pretty to taste!
Has anybody tried this dessert before? It’s definitely a new favorite of mine!

A Helping Hand, or Bowl
Last week I was invited to attend a fundraising event for a wonderful cause….Second Harvest Food bank (now known nationally as Feeding America). Working diligently with other partnering agencies, my local chapter of this organization feeds 158,000 hungry folks each month by stocking food pantries and providing other resources. The event is called Bowlicious and this year marks its 9th anniversary.
For the price of a ticket, each attendee was given a gorgeous handcrafted bowl, donated by local potters. We then used our chosen bowl to enjoy the event’s meal, several varieties of soup and chili donated by local restaurants.
The idea behind Bowlicious is to remind us just how much we might take one bowl of soup for granted and bringing our bowl home at the end of the night serves as a lasting reminder of this.
I think it was a really good idea for a fundraiser and I felt so special to have been included. I chose a medium sized turquoise bowl, in case you were wondering and it’s already gotten some good use.
Happy Tuesday!

Happy Birthday Pe-Pa!
I’ve been very blessed in my life to have wonderful grandparents who made me feel like the most special person in the world…it’s only fair to return the favor in the best way I can.
Today is my Pe-pa’s birthday and since he is one of my most loyal blog readers, I knew he’d see this tribute. I was the first grandchild so I like to think I gave him the opportunity to learn how to be a grandfather. And what a good one he is!
His life has been full of much hard work, but also great rewards. He is well-known and well-loved in my hometown. He’s also a pretty good sport…this was a couple years ago at his birthday fiesta!
Happy Birthday Pe-pa! I hope you know how very special you are!

Monday Mishmash
It was one of those truly lovely weekends…when time moves a little slower and the calendar is packed to the brim with activities you wish would last forever. I whipped up a batch of my great-aunt Geneva’s famous fruit salad (to be featured in a future anti-recipe post!)
I attended a special banquet honoring members of my college sorority (I volunteer as an advisor and it has been oh so rewarding). After the lunch, each alum was gifted a centerpiece…gorgeous southern hydrangeas, white roses and daisies.
Egg-shaped Reese’s pieces in perfect pastel colors fill my great-grandmother’s prized carnival glass candy dish. Try walking by without popping one or two in your mouth!
A single rose in the most breathtaking shade of coral…isn’t it amazing how color can speak to us?
Finally, a brass tray I found at a church rummage sale for $4…there’s nothing better than rummaging with a best friend! You might recognize those birdies from a previous post….one special reader picked them up for me as a birthday surprise! So sweet…or should I say tweet?
Happy Monday Friends!

Gimme some sugar
It’s Friday and we’re all ready for the weekend (aren’t we?) so in lieu of piling one more thing on top of your already overworked mind, I’m keeping today’s post short and sweet.
Hope you have a chance to love on somebody this weekend…even if that somebody is yourself! Happy Friday sweet cheeks!

Pink & Green Thursday: Spring Blooms
I’ve always loved this quote, but I never knew it came from a song. I’m sharing the rest of the lyrics and hope they’ll make you smile too!
Bloom, bloom, bloom where you're planted.
You will find your way.
Bloom, bloom, bloom where you're planted.
You will have your day.
Look at the flowers, look at them growing,
They never worry, they never work.
Look at the way our Father clothes them,
Each with beauty all its own.
Each with beauty all its own.
Some plant the seeds that others will water,
But in all things, God gives the growth.
Come let Him garden the flowers within you,
Come and discover some you've never known.
Come and discover some you've never known.
Look at the love that lies deep within you,
Let yourself be! Let yourself be!
Look at the gifts you have been given.
Let them go free! Let them go free!
Let them go free! Let them go free!
Happy Thursday my friends! Is everyone having a good week?
p.s. I’m linking up with Miss Trish for today’s post!
